Way back when, on my old blog, i had a tutorial on how to say what you were listening to in game. People have requested that i post that tutorial again, so here it is.

If you are looking for the Linux or mac versions of this information, please visit my friend TinMan’s blogpost about it.

Ingredients

Ok, first off you will need quite a few things. I know how to do it for a few media players, but if you look around, there are many more you can add.

  • A media player
  • AMIP for your player. There are many plugins with amip available, so download the right one.
  • Amip configurator (you want this, it makes setup a breeze)
  • Tremulous (Thats a given, you should already have it)

Media player and AMIP Set Up.

AMIP ConfiguratorOnce you have downloaded the various files that suit your installation, and have installed them, you can get to work. Be sure your plugin is installed for your player. If it is not, then you will not get any data. Launch the AMIP configurator, switch to the settings pane, and point it to the location of the config script for the plugin[1. It will usually tell you in the installer, but if it doesn't, there is good help online. Usually its the plugin directory of the media player].

When the interface refreshes and displays all the settings, switch to the Other Integrations/File/Email branch (expand as required). Check the enabled box, and then in the file box, add a string that relates to your tremulous base[2. The directory where you installed tremulous. The default setting on windows is C:/Program Files/Tremulous/Base, but yours may be different]. You don't have to make it a local base, even if your running a GUID version, as only one user can be on a windows box at once. When your in the base directory, type \music.cfg at the end of the string. This will be the file the information is saved to.

Now you can customize the message. If you want to just use a premade one, use the following on the Play line:

 me is listening to ^5%2 - ^4%4 - ^3%1 ^2(%pm:%ps/%min:%sec)

That will display the name, album, author, elapsed time and total time. You can customize the message any way you want, the codes to use can be seen at the amip wiki.

Check the Delete file on Exit and Update every second boxes, and then click OK.

Tremulous Setup

Now you have the outside trem parts all working, but what about the stuff that makes it go IN trem. This is actually a simple process. Take a key you want to use as your print message, i use X, but it can be anything. Open the Trem console by pressing ~ (tilda/grave accent), and type:

/bind X exec music.cfg

Hit enter, and now your ready. Every time you hit x, it will display a message like *[H] Op>Paradox|SST+| is listening to Coldplay - Album - Clocks (1:32/23:213212)
