A few days ago, I reviewed offline blog editor Blog Desk. (BlogDesk: Desktop blog editor.). I have since found a much better blog editor. This editor is Zoundry Raven. Its still in beta, yet it has more features and feels more stable than most of the other editors i tried. Its interface is clean, and very web2.0-ish, complete with silk icons and drop down configuration settings. It also supports wordpress far more than most of the other editors i tried.

Well, today, after getting fed up with MU over a few things, I have decided to move back to plain old Wordpress. This decision was made for a number of reasons. First and foremost, I would never use MU as it was intended, and that is to create a blogging community. I was going to offer a few simple blogs here and there, and nothing really big, so I was using an overly complex program. Also, many of my favorite plugins would not work with MU, and these were useful. The only reason why I really started using MU in the first place was to mess with OpenID providers, and there really weren’t too many options in the MU provider, so nothing was keeping me. Now that I have switched, however, I have added a number of features back.

I don’t know when they posted it, but the Google Chart api has gotten much better. They have added a few new types of graph, such as spark graphs (think stock charts), country maps (for viewing data by country), and a cool new graph called a Google-o-meter (like a gauge). This api is getting better and better, and since it has no data cap, i am thinking about some implementations here on this site. Perhaps a Google-o-meter instead of review stars, or a pie chart in polls. The possibilities are really endless.

Updating a blog can be a hassle. It involves going to your site, going to the admin interface, going to the write pane, then filling out a form, finally submitting it. There is a better way. It is the desktop blog editor. One of my favorite is BlogDesk.

Well, the lan party went well yesterday. We had a halo tournament as well as a brawl tournament. In the Halo tournament, i made it all the way to the finals. The final score, 25-23 them. Brawl looked like it went well, although i cant make a good judgement, as i dont play it.

All in all, this was very successful.
People seemed to enjoy Call of Duty, and that was to be expected, but very few people played tremulous. Ah well, i played some games on SST, and was entertained.

One of the tools i quite like is Autonomous Lan Party. This is a php script designed to run a lan party, and it features many things, such as tournament management, server listing, file listing, teamspeak info, food runs, schedules, and many other things. It is quite useful. It hasn’t been updated in a while, but it runs with php and mysql, so it is compatible with most servers.

Download it, try a demo, and more at http://www.nerdclub.net/alp/.

Well, the redesign has been quite painless. This new theme is simple, clean, and people seem to like it. I have gotten some comments on it looking wordpress, and well, thats what it is. Since the migration, i have added a few features here and there, but nothing too drastic. I am a bit hesetant to add things, as i am waiting for MU 1.5 to come out. Its in RC-1 now, so it should come any day.

I have also switched to a 2 bar layout, as the previous one was feeling cramped and overloaded. Please tell me how you feel about this.

Other stuff

This blog has consumed a large share of my time lately, and as such, i havn’t devoted it to other things. Rest assured that i will be returning to Tremulous, my various forums, Xbox live, and all the other places i hang out.

Lan

This weekend I am helping run a Lan party. This is a fair sized party, with a number of fun games on the board, including Tremulous and Halo 3. This looks like it will be quite fun, I cant wait to defeat everyone in halo 3 *joke*. Expect a full writeup on it later.

Well, as you have likely noticed, there have been several major changes around here.

First off, the site has been restyled. This was done because i felt the old style was getting stale and boring, as it was a bit plainto start with. I also took into account complaints about the way Ajax works, that is, no back button functionality, a long load time with no user measurable progress, and an incompatibiltiy with many security settings. So, this new site is much more classic internet. With the change comes several new features. I can use many more inline links, as they will not break the site. This will, and allready has, lead to a number of new features, each that will reveal itself over time. One of the more useful features is comment quoting. Simply select any text you want anywhere on the site, and hit the quote button on the comment form. Presto, all quoted for you.

Also, as forementioned, this site now uses Wordpress-mu instead of Wordpress. I have signups disabled for the moment, as i am waitng for version 1.5 to come out, to add functionality. When this version comes out, i will offer signups. When you sign up, you get enhanced comment rights, like editing your own, as well as a backend for other things. To a select few users, i will be granting personal blogs. These will be for anything they desire, and the only thing I will require is a link at the bottom of the page to my site. In addition to blog hosting, these few accounts will also act as OpenID accounts, allowing said users to use their blogging credentials to register on any other site.

Please give me any feedback on these changes, new design, or other elements.

Today, I changed the backend of the site from wordpress stand alone to wordpress mu (wordpress multi user) This new version, although 99% the same as the old one, has a few changes. First off, there was a downgrade for some features. I am waiting for an upgrade that is sure to come soon, as wordpress.com is already using one. For those of you who dont know, the same software that powers wordpress.com now powers this site.

More things are in the pipeline for this site, including, but not limited to:
OpenID accounts
More blogs for different people
Even more goodies.

But, while im waiting for an upgrade, some features will be disabled or not functional. Hold tight, though, and they will come soon. Things will be rough for a bit, but in a while, the site will be much better, and there will be more feature.

I am by no means new to Winamp, i used it way back when it was shareware. But when iTunes came to Windows way back in 2003, I switched, because at that time, Winamp did not offer a library management system like iTunes did. I have used iTunes happily for quite a while, until apple started messing around. Now, I am back to winamp, and i like the new winamp.
