If you are at all like me, and i suspect someone is, you will use software on systems it wasn’t designed for. I use Irssi for chatting, on windows, due to its supereor functionality to many other clients. Unfortunately, a side effect of using software on systems it wasn’t designed for is having to use a series of workarounds to make it function. I had fixed most everything with Irssi, except for UTF-8 rendering. I fixed that today.

Windows 7 was announced today, if you can call it that. While knowledge about some of the operating system’s features has been out for months, this is the first time screenshots and any real meat has been released.
Among other things, 7 features a new interface, performance gains[1], time saving features, and many other fixes. What particularly interests me is the new Taskbar. Instead of merely holding running programs and toolbars, it holds tasks, icons, and many other things, a la OS X Dock. Window titles can be moved around[2], and the division between Quick Launch toolbar, the taskbar, and the system tray has been blurred. Additionally, each entry in the start menu now has a Jump Menu
, which lets you repeat frequent tasks. The Windows Search has been refined, and now uses learning, much like application launchers, to determine what you want to do.
Many window management features, a la Exposé, are added to the system, triggered by hot corners[3]. These include making all windows transparent, letting you see the desktop, and making a single window maximized.

- You move your mouse into a corner of the display and leave it there for a few seconds, triggering an action [↩]
This is a feature that is found in SMF, and a lot of MyBB users I know have asked about a similar feature. While this is not a simple preference pane value, it is easy to set up, and anyone should be able to do so.

One of the more disputed features of the new Xbox360 experience is the addition of Avatars. Some see it as an important step forward, others see it as a copy of a Wii feature, still others see it as an added cuteness that was unneeded.
Whatever you think, this video should give you some idea of how they will work.
I must say, its more than I thought it would be. I thought it would be a cheap knockoff of The Sims + Mii, but it really looks like it has been well thought out. There are so many options, more than either mixed, and some unique customization, such as gloves and rings, are included.
I don’t know what the stars on features are, but perhaps this means that these are newly downloaded/added features. If it is such a system, i wonder if its pushed [1. By pushed, i mean automatically recieved], or the user still has to download it.

Aside from a few screenshots and videos out of E3, and a demo at PAX, there has been little concrete fact about the new Xbox 360 interface.
